Uganda’s Government Issues Heavy Rainfall and Flash Flood Alert

The Office of the Prime Minister in Uganda has issued a nationwide weather advisory warning of heavy rainfall and an elevated risk of flash floods and landslides in several parts of the country.

According to the advisory, the alert is in effect from February 19 to February 28, 2026, and primarily affects Western Uganda, Central Uganda, including the Lake Victoria Basin, and Eastern Uganda — particularly the Elgon and Bukedi sub-regions.

Alert Level: Public Urged to Prepare

Authorities have called on citizens to remain vigilant and take precautionary measures to ensure safety during the forecast period. The advisory highlights the likelihood of intense rainfall that may result in:

  • Flash floods in low-lying and flood-prone areas

  • Urban flooding, especially in major towns and citie,s including Kampala

  • Disruptions to transport and business operations

  • Landslides, mudslides, and rockfalls in mountainous regions such as Mount Elgon and the Kigezi highlands

  • Strong winds and hailstorms

Flood-Prone Areas: Avoid Risky Crossings

Residents in flood-prone communities have been advised not to cross flooded roads or bridges. The government also urged households and businesses to clear drainage channels to reduce water accumulation.

Local authorities have been directed to inspect high-risk zones and issue timely guidance to residents.

Landslide-Prone Regions on High Alert

In landslide-prone districts, especially on steep slopes, residents are encouraged to stay alert for early warning signs such as cracks in the soil and leaning trees. The advisory cautions against construction and cultivation on unstable slopes.

Mapped and registered households in high-risk zones have been advised to evacuate if signs of imminent landslides appear. Citizens have been encouraged to report warning signs to local authorities or to contact the National Emergency Coordination and Operations Centre (NECOC).
