Going the Extra Mile: Bank of Africa Uganda Reaffirms Its Commitment to Customers

For Bank of Africa Uganda, customer service is not limited to a single day or week. This October, the Bank dedicated the entire month to celebrating its customers, recognising its teams and reinforcing its commitment to delivering better customer experiences under the theme “The Extra Mile.”

The theme challenged staff to look beyond the expected and consider what it takes to make every customer interaction better. It was a month of reflection, learning and engagement, with the Bank using different activities to bring the message to life.

The message from the Bank’s leadership was clear: going the extra mile means moving beyond what is expected, understanding customers, finding solutions and looking for that additional way to make a difference.

That message was reflected in the activities organised throughout the month. Staff took part in engagements celebrating African cultures and leaders who have contributed to the continent’s development, alongside lighter team activities such as a Uganda Premier League-inspired dressing challenge.

The focus on service also extended to learning. As part of the month’s programme, staff participated in a customer experience training session themed “The Extra Mile: From Service to Ownership,” facilitated by Antony M. Kituuka, FCCA, MBA (Oil & Gas), Managing Director of Avara Business Infinitum Group Limited. The session encouraged staff to move beyond simply serving customers and take greater ownership of the overall customer experience.

For Anna Namusoke, Senior Manager, Service Excellence at Bank of Africa Uganda, that ownership is central to what the theme represents.

“The Extra Mile is about going beyond what is expected to make every customer interaction better. It is about listening, understanding, solving and finding that little extra way to make a difference. For us, this is not just a theme for Customer Service Month; it is the standard we want to carry into how we serve our customers every day,” said Anna.

She noted that the experience customers have with the Bank is shaped by more than the outcome of a transaction.

“Customer experience is ultimately about ownership. A customer may remember the solution we provided, but they will also remember how we made them feel during the process. Going the extra mile means taking responsibility for the experience from beginning to end and looking for ways to make it better,” Anna said.

As October comes to a close, the activities may end, but the commitment behind them continues. For BOA Uganda, the month has been an opportunity to reinforce a service culture that should extend into every customer interaction, long after the celebrations are over.

Going the extra mile, ultimately, is about making the effort to do better, creating experiences that customers value and ensuring that every interaction counts.
